"Sapphire has excellent mechanical and optical properties. It is extremely hard (9 on the mohs scale) and has a strength which is retained even at elevated temperature. In addition, it is resistant to vertually all forms of chemical attack. It has a transmission band which extends from the IV at around 0.18nm, throughout the visible and near regions to 5.5 microns."
